9 And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.
10 And I took the little book out of the angel’s hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.
11 And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.
(Revelation 10:9-11)
When the apostle John was inspired by the Holy Spirit on the Isle of Patmos to see future events, the devoted disciple of Christ was shown an event that was “sweet” in the mouth (the expectation of the soon return of Jesus) but “bitter” in the belly (Jesus did not come on 22 October 1844).
The Millerite movement prepared themselves to see Jesus Christ burst through the clouds of heaven with countles glorious angels to “cleanse” the earth by fire:
“And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.” (Daniel 8:14)
When Jesus did not appear on 22 October 1844, many nominal Christians simply either left the faith or created new movements. However, a small, committed group continued to pray for guidance via the Holy Spirit and were led to the Bible truth regarding 1844. Their study concluded that the reference to Daniel 8:14 was misunderstood. The “sanctuary” to be cleansed was the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary where Jesus began His atonement as our High Priest in 1844 – the final phase of salvation prior to His second coming. The same group also understood that the heavenly sanctuary could only be cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ, while at the same time He would cleanse His church from their sins. When the atonement has been completed in heaven and simultaneously within the transformed hearts of His true followers, Jesus will utter the following words:
“11 He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.
12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.”
(Revelation 22:11)
Are you prepared for the atonement ? Are you allowing Jesus to seal you with His divine Spirit ? What “work” have you shown Jesus ?
In other words, 22 Oct 1844 was a blessing to those Christians who understood that Jesus moved from the holy place to the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary to cleanse His church from sin. Praise God that we have an Advocate with the Father ! Praise God for the blood spilled at Calvary, taken into the heavenly sanctuary to reconcile us back to God ! Praise God that one day soon the following will take place:
“1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.”
(1 John 3:1-3)
